The Century Co., New York & London, (1931). First Edition, first printing. Octavo (9 X 6 in., 238 X 154 mm). 333 pages. Blue cloth, spine and front board lettered in gilt, with embossed Icarus design on front board. Very Good, with slight sun fading of spine, light scuffing and rubbing. Hinges are sound. Art Ronnie’s aviation-themed bookplate affixed to the pastedown endpaper. Signed and inscribed in the year of publication on the front free endpaper, “To Jack Rogers: Dear Jack: The flights in this book are – I hope – not quite as dizzy as some of those in ‘Hell Divers.’ With every good wish. Frank ‘Spig’ Wead. Los Angeles, Calif., October 27, 1931.” A scarce book and especially desirable to find signed with such a personal inscription and aviation content. After becoming partially paralyzed after a fall in 1926, Wead turned to screenwriting, receiving two Academy Award nominations in 1938, one for Best Original Story for Test Pilot, and a second for Best Screenplay for The Citadel. John Ford directed Wings of Eagles in 1957, with John Wayne portraying Wead’s contributions to Naval aviation.
