The Tremoloa is a unique stringed instrument belonging to the extended guitar-zither family, produced in America in response to the rapid increase in popularity of Hawaiian music during the 1920s and continuing to be produced until the 1950s. The Tremoloa simulates the tonal effects of the Hawaiian Steel Guitar by passing a weighted roller stabilized by a swinging lever (termed a bar or arm), along a single melody string and creating a tremolo, an effect which also gives rise to the instrument's name. The instrument also possesses four chords, to strum out the harmony with the right hand, while using the attached pick on the thumb of the left hand. Measures 26" x 13". Shows moderate wear on face of instrument with heavy surface scrapes on back of instrument. Single melody string at right is broken, but can be repaired. Otherwise, in very good condition for its age. From the collection of Ken McMeans. 20% of the proceeds will benefit the Jeremy Wilson Foundation.
