48” x 58” undulating, horizontal bands of alternating red, white, and black pony beads on native-tanned hide. Row of blue pony beads across shoulder seam. Blue, white and black pony beads across the bottom. Fringe on sleeves and bottom of dress. Fine condition, c 1860 SOUTHERN PLATEAU DRESS by Benson L Lanford The striking beadwork in “pony beads” across the yoke accentuates this dress composed of two exceptionally well-tanned bighorn sheep hides. Bighorn (mountain sheep) skins are of sufficiently large size for large articles of clothing, and yet thin, durable, and light weight enough to wear with comfort. Such dresses were / are always worn with a belt. The fullness of the lower half—the skirt portion, permits ease of leg movement as well as for sitting and even riding horseback. (READ MORE p 131)
