Auction Details

This exceptional auction consists of a rare collection of Antiquities from Central America that was accumulated over many years. Most are from the Greater Nicoya Region (Nicaragua - Costa Rica) the few exceptions are noted. Pre-Columbian (Pre-Christopher Columbus, 1500 AD) range in age from 1500 AD to 1550 BC.The estimated age is noted for each Pre-Columbian item. All dimensions are in inches for the Pre-Columbian items (1 inch=2.5cm). The most dominant tribe at the time of the arrival of Columbus was the Chorotegas, who broke off from the main tribe in Mexico approximately 800 AD and migrated to this Nicoya region.

Nicoya region ceramic vessels usually depict animal themes such as serpents, jaguars, humans, monsters, turtles, snakes, alligators, etc. It is thought that these animal vessels were used to protect the tribe during certain ceremonial rituals and were often buried with their owners. This sort of decorated and protective vessel was usually owned by people of high rank within the tribe, such as Chiefs or the Sharman (Priest).

The pottery is ceramic, which is made from clay that is baked in earthen ovens at various temperatures. The tribes who made and used these were known as the Nahava, Maribias, Chontial, and the Chorotega.

The Kachina dolls were collected over many years and the previous owner actually met with a number of the master carvers represented in this auction. The height of each doll is measured in both inches (") and Centimeters (cm).

Additional estate items include quality smalls and artwork.
