Hagelstein (1844-1915) early Paint Rock Texas Spurs
Rare 1900s iron Texas spurs with 1 1/2", 22 short point rowels and swinging buttons. Only two pair have been identified to date as made by Chris Hagelstein of Paint Rock, Texas. Both pair are illustrated in two books co-authored by Kurt House and come from his personal collection. PROVENANCE: Discovered by collector Curtis Stroup in a barn about 50 miles from Paint Rock, Texas in 1997. The old owner of the ranch and barn verified that he had bought them at the Hagelstein shop in Paint Rock "....before Prohibition", c 1920s. Hagelstein, a former postmaster of Paint Rock, died in 1915 so the spurs probably date from the 1915-1920 period. Chris’ brother, Henry Hagelstein, of San Angelo, Texas was also known to have made bits and spurs until at least 1908. Both brothers were known for making bits, which were marked either C Hagelstein, PAINT ROCK TEX or H Hagelstein, San Angelo, Tex in a distinctive one inch silver or aluminum concho on both cheeks
