[Gheeraerts, Marcus - Potter, Paulus] - 11 suites with in all 86 prints (80 half-page and 6 full-page ones) published by Nicolaas Visscher (1638-1709) in 1664 at Amsterdam. The prints were engraved by Marc de Bye (1639-1688) of The Hague, after Marcus Gheeraerts (1521-1590) and Paulus Potter (1625-1654). Old polished sheep over boards (bottom joint of lower cover splitting), blind ruled border on covers, flat spine, red sp. edges. Excellent copy. Cfr. ill. € 3000/4000 A splendid and important collection of animal prints published by Visscher in 1664. "Gheeraert's series of 16 bears is exceptional among his prints. It is the earliest dated example of his work, 1559, and therefore was drawn at Bruges, but we know it only from the plates etched by Marc de Bye (1639-1688) of the Hague and published by Nicholas Visscher of Amsterdam in 1664... The inclusion of Gheeraerts' designs of a century before is a tribute to his reputation and could be explained by their acquisition by the Visscher family in the course of earlier dealings. The bear drawings almost make up a cinema "animation". They represent a single huge shaggy European bear in sixteen postures..." (Hodnett, Marcus Gheeraerts the elder, p. 61). Contents: I - 4 engravings (lions and wolves) numbered 1-4, by De Bye after Potter. - II - 16 engr. of bears by De Bye after Marcus Gheeraerts, numbered 1-16. - IIa - 4 engr. (bears and boars), numbered 5-8. - III - 16 engr. of sheep numbered 1-16, by De Bye. - IV - 8 engr. of goats numbered 1-8, by De Bye after Potter. - V - 8 engr. of cattle numbered 1-8, by De Bye after Potter. - VI - 8 engr. of cattle numbered 1-9, by De Bye after Potter. - VII - 4 (of 8) engr. of cattle numbered 1-2, 7-8, by De Bye after Potter. - VIII - 8 engr. of cattle numbered 1-8, by De Bye after Potter. - IX - 4 engr. of cattle numbered 3-6 (by De Bye after Potter ?). - X - 6 full-page engr. of horses numbered 1-6 (1 signed Paulus Potter¨).
