G S Garcia, Elko Peacock Bit
Specially designed and ordered by the father of the consignor directly from Garcia's Elko, Nevada shop, this utterly unique, one-of-a-kind stiff-jaw, half-breed, silver and gold inlaid, Peacock bit is in pristine condition with 40% original bluing. Cheeks measure 7 3/4" in overall length and are boldly maker-marked with G S GARCIA inside the right cheek and ELKO, NEV (Dutch N) on the other. CONSIGNORS RECOLLECTIONS: I believe it was custom-designed for my Dad, probably in the early 20s. Enclosed as an attachment is a design sketch for the bit I found in my Dad's papers. The same peacock design is on several other items Dad had made up in his early years. The little nuggets on the tail feathers appear to be real gold, the rest is silver inlay and blued gun metal. My Dad grew up in Cleveland, Ohio in the first part of the 1900s and as a young man made a number of automobile trips out west to California and Nevada looking for a ranch to buy and always passing through Elko on his way out and back. Eventually he bought our present ranch in Monterey County in the late 1920s/early 1930s. He loved the western ranch life and bought a number of high quality pieces of western gear, some of which he used in parades, which were popular in the 30s, 40s and 50s.
