Literature:
The series of watercolour cartoons designed by Burne-Jones for St.Patrick’s in 1875 to be executed by Messrs. Morris & Co. are cited in Malcolm Bell’s, Edward Burne-Jones A Record and Review, 1893, Appendix II, p.118;
See also: A.C. Sewter, The Stained Glass of William Morris and His Circle, Yale University Press, 2 Vols., 1975, p.218 cite an excerpt from Burne-Jones’s account book with Morris & Co. for June 1875. The artist writes: “St.Patrick’s, Dublin, small figures of Prudence & Fortitude studied from Margaret Burne-Jones ...and dated 23 June 1875: “St.Patrick’s small drawing, to prostituting genius..., by designing three infamous subjects to wit: Joseph distributing corn, Solomon doing nothing, and David Killing Goliath...”;
See also: Martin Harrison & Bill Waters, Burne-Jones, 2nd edition, 1989 for a Burne-Jones’ pencil drawing showing part of the layout of the St.Patrick’s window, reproduced, which is now in the collection of the Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery (433’27).
Note:
Harrison and Waters reproduce a sketch-design by Burne-Jones of a 3 ft. window, with figures of Prudence and Fortitude in the outer lights (the upper centre figure design is not mentioned) in the collection of Birmingham City Museum & Art Gallery, which they identify with the design of St. Patrick’s Church, Dublin.
The model used for the figures of Prudence and Fortitude was the artist’s daughter, Margaret.
As no such stained glass window is in St.Patrick’s today, it is assumed that the commission reached the design stage, but for whatever reason, was not executed.
The Chadwick Factory provided a number of workmen for the Morris firm. Frank Chadwick inherited this watercolour on the demise of the William Morris factory.
