After WWI his family moved to Oklahoma where young James was given his first pair of spurs by a cowboy who taught him to ride. He began collecting in 1944 with a pair of silver spurs hand-wrought by an Acoma Indian. From that time on, and after he moved to California, his insatiable curiosity took him to dealers and collectors, and bit and spur makers throughout the Western states, to find not only pieces to add to his collection, but also to find information about those colorful individuals.
