Cedar Hill Tunnel & Mining Company Certificate, Nevada Territory dated March 25, 1861 - Issued in San Francisco. 5 Shares, #61 made out to G. Frank Smith. Incorporated Dec. 29th, 1860; capitalized at $1,000,000; 10,000 shares at $100 per. Signed by President, XXXX, Treasurer, J. A. Morison and Secretary, C. L. Farrington. Black border printed by B. F. Butlers Lith., San Francisco. Issued and ink cancelled. Seated allegorical woman in middle and standing one on left with shield with capitalization on it. Predecessor tunnel project to the Sutro Tunnel project, but it was started and never finished. Started in 1862 the Cedar Hill Tunnel and Mining Company undertook a tunnel project that tunneled about 2,000 feet into the mountain when the project was given up. The tunnel passed into the hands of the Sierra Nevada Company. C. L. Farrington was one of the founders of Harris & Marchand Assay Office in Sacramento and later Marysville. He later founded Alta Express Co. (Ref. “Anatomy of a Western Cover – Expresses and Assayers” by Paul Franklin in Western Express Research Journal Vol.61 No.2 June 2011).
