A lovely and faithful homage to the best, from the legendary Miles City, Montana saddle shop, Bill Allison’s artistic replica features an antiqued, two-tone, burgundy, floral carved, squared skirt, loop-seat, slick fork, high back saddle. Matching Martingale and Bridle mounted with an early California Spade Bit Bill Allison is a 61-year-old saddle maker who grew up on a ranch on Little Powder River in southeastern Montana. His first inspiration for leather working came at age 16 from a Miles City maker named Pete Verbek. Bill built his first saddle in 1978 during a cold winter, continuing to make saddles for neighboring ranchers and friends over the years. A series of devastating droughts drove Bill from ranching into the welcome relief of his leather craft. In 2000, the Allison family bought a building in Roundup and started a saddle shop where Bill makes the saddles, his wife Brenda makes chaps, and their daughter Tassie, makes all of the tack and does most of the repairs. Bill Allison is the recipient of this year’s Montana’s Circle of American Masters in Visual Folk and Traditional Arts award. This award celebrates the contributions of Montana’s master artists in visual traditional and folk arts. Throughout their lifetime, a member of Montana’s Circle of American Masters has created a notable body of work. Of significant cultural and artistic stature, their work represents the historic, traditional, and innovative arts and handcrafts distinctive to the State.
