African Luba Female Caryatid wood stool, Democratic
African Luba Female Caryatid wood stool, Democratic Republic of the Congo. The Kingdom of "Luba" or Luba Empire (1585-1889) was a pre-colonial Central African state that arose in the marshy grasslands of the Upemba Depression in what is now southern Democratic Republic of Congo. A "Caryatid" is a sculpted/carved female figure serving as an architectural support taking the place of a column or a pillar supporting an entablature on her head. The Greek term karyatides literally means "maidens of Karyai", an ancient town of Peloponnese. Provenance: Private collection collected between 1910 and 1930. SIZE: see attached ruler photo.
