19th century miniature portrait of a naval officer, Capt Jemmet Mainwaring of the frigate Babet which foundered in 1801 Babet was built at Le Havre, one of a class of 20-gun corvettes in the French navy. She was captured by the British in 1794, during the French Revolutionary Wars and spent her remaining years as a ship of the Royal Navy. Under the command of Captain Jemmett Mainwairing, she took part in the Anglo-Russian Invasion of Holland in 1799. She was lost at sea near Jamaica having sailed from Martinique in 1801
