Josef Farhi "un jour de beaute" pochoir. The Pochoir process is a mthod of hand coloring, which, by means of accurately cut stencils, enabled the skillful hand colorist to reproduce the exact colors and textures of the artist's original painting. Several young French printmakers had developed the pochoir technique of hand coloring in Paris in the late nineteenth century. They took as their guide the Japanese art of fabric stenciling, and they sought to revitalize the art of book illustration, which at the time was suffering from monochromatic uniformity resulting from the then current obsession with photomechanical printing techniques. Pochoir, with it adroit use of actual pigments applied by hand through finely cut stencils, was an artistic revelation.
The making of a pochoir involves three major steps. First the original illustration in analyzed and broken down into its constituent parts. The underlying drawing is then translated into a wood engraving, an etching or a lithoprint. Then each color area is analyzed in order that its own accurately cut stencil may be made, normally from a sheet of very fine zinc or copper or from thin oiled card, depending on the result required, the size of the stencil and the epxected print run. The next step is to accurately cut the stencil, scrupulously following the outline and the subtle detailing of each color. If there is a slight variation in the color this may require three separate stencils, which can be cut to graduate the color during the printing process. In the final step, the original colors are matched to the printers selection of opaque, transluscent or transparent colors and then a base is used to acheive the correct viscocity. The order of printing and the method of applying the chosen colors are then determined. The colors can be applied with a soft, medium, medium-hard or stiff brush, or with a soft or textured sponge, and they may be partly removed with blotting apper to obtain a variegated effect. flat rate packing and shipping continental US $60
