A book on Jacques-Emile Ruhlmann published on the occasion of a recent major exhibition at the Musée des Années 30 was unambiguous in its assessment of his status. The book's title, Ruhlmann: un génie de l'Art déco, identifies unequivocally the designer's prime position at the pinnacle of the Art Deco style. Ruhlmann was one of the defining creators in that glorious moment for the decorative arts in France. Within the 20-year span of his career, and across the range of his production, one can identify distinct chapters and a variety of stylistic strands. Ruhlmann's designs could be elaborate, and they could be restrained. On occasion, his work contains subtle echoes of 18th-century French traditions; at times he appears to align himself with the emerging Modern movement in his lines and purity-though without ever compromising his ongoing commitment to the finest standards of craftsmanship. The following series of lots well illustrate this more restrained, one might say more modern aspect of his work-these are fine furnishings distinguished by their faultless proportions, their quality and their sophisticated understatement.
