Deitch, EVERYTHING THAT'S INTERESTING IS NEW: THE DAKIS JOANNOU COLLECTION, 1996, p. 137 (illustrated) In Donald Judd's seminal 1965 treatise Specific Objects, the artist concluded "the form of a work and its materials are closely related." He further surmised that "there is an objectivity to the obdurate identity of a material." Untitled, 1967, fabricated from unyielding galvanized steel, clearly embodies these pivotal theories and serves as a prime example of minimalist sculpture. Judd's work consists of a single layer of galvanized iron (iron coated in zinc). The simplicity of material enhances the clarity and strength of the form, and with his appropriation of materials of industrial production, Judd references the rise of technology during the mid-'60s. In Untitled, Judd rejects emotion and sentimentality and instead chooses a more impersonal language of potency, order and strength. This brevity of form and resonant symbolism exemplifies the essence of minimalism.
