preaching to the choir, darryl pottorf
Darryl Pottorf has been producing visually provocative forms for more than three decades. Pottorf was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, in 1952 and grew up in Florida. He made Florence, Italy his home from 1976 to 1978, then established a studio in Southwest Florida. Earlier work reflects an appreciation of architecture and classical art, consisting of combines using materials found while searching local flea markets. In the early 1980's, Pottorf began experimenting with more minimal expressionistic paintings, creating simple forms with varied textures using a method of painting aluminum with black marine enamel. By the late 80's he began experimenting with imagery, developing a method to transfer photo images directly to aluminum and lexan. This became the Black and Silver series. In the 1990's, Pottorf expanded his palette to include color. He began transferring color images onto paper mounted on poly-laminate, pointing over images with a grid of crisp lines or with more painterly strokes, making the images appear beneath a powdery veil that subdues color and form, giving the paintings the physical attributes of oil on canvas and the surface delicacy of watercolor. Enmeshing cultures and images places Pottorf squarely in the post-modern camp. His works possess the restlessness of a jump-cut music video coupled with a classical equanimity. For more than twenty years, Pottorf has been associated with world preeminent artist Robert Rauschenberg, first as assistant and currently as a collaborator. Pottorf's work has been exhibited and collected around the world.<BR>Preaching to the Choir is a UV coated watercolor and acrylic on poly-laminate.
