The Grass Valley Mining Co. owned the Grass Valley lode (gold) at Pinos Altos, New Mexico in the Pinos Altos district in the Sierra Madre range. Rich gold placers and lodes were discovered in 1869 at an area named Rich Gulch. The discoverers used California mine names throughout the region. The main operating company was the Pinos Altos Mining Co. The area was so remote and dangerous, that the first year five mail carriers were killed by Apache warriors along with 2 passengers, plus many other attacks, according to Ross Raymond in 1870.
