Robert Rauschenberg was born in Port Arthur, Texas in 1925. He became one of the major artists of his generation and is credited along with Jasper Johns of breaking the stronghold of Abstract Expressionism. Rauschenberg began his formal studies in art in the Kansas City Art Institute in 1947 and 1948. He studied briefly in Paris at the Academie Julian, and from 1948 to 1949 was at Black Mountain College in North Carolina where he studied under Josef Albers. There he also met composer John Cage and choreographer Merce Cunningham and collaborated closely with both of them. This period was followed by several years of attendance at the Art Students League in New York City. Rauschenberg is known for assemblage, conceptualist methods and willingness to experiment with non-artistic materials- all innovations that anticipated later movements such as Pop Art, Conceptualism, and Minimalism. He also created environmental works that manipulated light, shadow and sound with interaction with the viewer. Printmaking was another aspect of his career, and by the late 1950's, he was incorporating newsprint into his paintings. Rauschenberg began to silkscreen paintings in 1962. His appropriation of images from magazines and newspapers and the union of both two and three-dimensionality mark him as a pivotal figure in art history and the Pop Art movement. His subject matter often focuses on modern urban city-life, revealing his preoccupation with the affects of modernization. Rauschenberg had his first career retrospective, organized by the Jewish Museum, New York, in 1963 and was awarded the Grand Prize for Painting in the 1964 Venice Biennale. He spent much of the remainder of the 1960's dedicated to more collaborative projects including printmaking, performance, choreography, set design and art and technology works. A large retrospective of his work was shown in several American cities from 1976-1978. In 1980 he had retrospectives at Berlin, Dusseldorf, Copenhagen, Frankfurt, Munich and London. In 1981, his photographs were shown at the Centre Pompidou, Paris. In 1997, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York, exhibited the largest retrospective of Rauschenberg's work to date, which traveled to Houston and to Europe in 1998. He lives on Captiva Island, Florida.
Gift is an original vegetable dye transfer on UV coated paper.
