c1920 - Underground Metal Mining Photographs :
A lot of 6 photographs of underground metal mining, all measuring 8 x 6" (one w/ white border). No photographer is noted on any of the images. 1) A view of 6 miners standing near the mine shift. "At the shaft in American Davies Mine No. 3" printed in white at upper left of image, "Tally Board" in white at center left, and "No. 9" in white at bottom right. High contrast and sharp focus. A "silvery" image appears at the right, left, and top edge, while several white spots are noted near the left and top. Otherwise, a very fine image. No information could be found concerning the "American Davies Mine" mentioned in the image. 2) A great view of six miners ready to dynamite an inderground area, complete with "Independent Dynamite" and Hercules Powder" boxes at their side and several holes with fuses showing on their left. The number "8" is printed in white in the lower right corner of the image. Very fine, despite "silvery" image and some fading along the bottom and top edges. A group of guys ready to "blow stuff up." 3) A view of seven miners, posing outside of their "cave," with one full and one empty bucket of ore to their right. This photograph has a 1/2" white border with high contrast and good to sharp focus. "This group was taken at this place we came out in this cave from under the roof" handwritten in pencil on the reverse. "9" printed in white in the lower left. Some discoloration at lower left and thin crease noted near center of image, otherwise very fine. 4) A view of four workers who appear to be working above rather than below ground. The men are all standing around a large machine that uses water to separate metal from ore, but it does not resemble a typical sluice box or long tom from the image. High contrast and sharp focus with "silvery" film along edges, otherwise very fine. 5) A view of three miners, one with drill and two with long poles used to place dynamite at proper depth before blast ignited. At least four fuses can be seen in the background, with boxes of "Atlas Gelatin" and "Atlas Extra" in the foreground. Some fading along the bottom edge and "silvery" film along top and left edge, otherwise very fine. Another group of guys ready to make a "big bang" underground. 6) A view of seven miners working hard underground with several full and empty ore carts in the foreground. High contraast and sharp focus, a very detailed image of hardworking men doing a dangerous job. A "silvery" film again found along the edges, along with a few small areas where the image has been scraped, otherwise very fine. An interesting group of quality images of underground mining.
