c1905 - American Indian Boarding School Photographs :
Lot of 4 photographs measuring 15’’x12’’on black matte. Medium contrast and focus is sharp. In good condition with very little wear. Mattes are in very good shape, only have minor wear on the sides. Photographs have small freckle and age marks. Photograph was produced by Kurz Photo. Location unknown, but most likely taken in the Midwestern United States. Taken on a chilly winters day, three out of four photographs were taken outside, showing several brick buildings along with a water tower. The waterpower is covered with ice and several inches of snow lay on the ground. The one photo taken inside is of the young students. The students are seated in a large room, boys and girls are separated. All students are dressed in western style clothing. Boarding schools for Native Americans started as a part of the Americanization of the Native population, children were forced to attend these schools, often located hours away from their homes. The last school closed in the 1970s, but the effects of the schools are still felt in the Native community today.
