Vintage FOR COLORED SHOES ONLY Segregation Sign
c. 1950-60s, Black History Printed Segregation Sign, “FOR COLORED SHOES ONLY.”, Framed, Very Fine.
An original vintage Printed Sign, 9.75 x 9” (by sight), period simple wooden framed to 11” x 10.5” having no date or place and boldly printed in large black text upon deep orange heavy paper, reading: “FOR COLORED SHOES ONLY.” The words “COLORED SHOES” having the largest letters, more than double the size of the remaining message. There are some minor surface scuffs and scratches, the black and brown painted frame has white paint on it which suggests this sign was actually used, being hung on display at some point. It is the type of message used in the Segregation era, possible this sign hung in a bowling alley or shoeshine stand to keep White and Black separate. Very rare and historically important in American Black History marking a shameful chapter, ready to display.
