Black Americana “Folk Art” Applique / Watercolor
c. 1900-30s Early 20th Century, Antique Applique & Watercolor Painting, Black Americana Folk Art Showing a Black Union Soldier with the rank of Private in the United States Army, Choice Extremely Fine.
This outstanding Black History related, “Folk Art” Style Painting measures 19.5” x 15.5” (by sight) and is beautifully framed in a handsome, modern decorative gilt and black painted wood to 25” x about 22” x 18” and is ready to hang upon display. This original artwork shows the soldier on special guard duty or perhaps marching in a parade. It is not signed or dated and appears to have been made in the area of New York or New England. The “Folk Art” style appliqué technique used by the artist was popular from the early 20th century, when this Painting was most likely created, and it is truly “one-of-a-kind.”

This Black Army Soldier’s uniform is made from Hand-painted cloth, with his face and rifle made of leather, plus very thin black paper used for his belt and side bayonet. There are no major problems or repairs, the painting has good color and everything appears clean and solid. A decorative feather plume is atop the Soldier’s Dress Shako and his unit number “7” is displayed below his single stripe, indicating his rank as a Private. This antique, museum quality American Folk Art Black Soldier Painting is truly special, worthy of the finest of collections and we have never encountered a finer example.
