This Scarce U.S. Military Model 1884 CADET "Trapdoor" Rifle has a 29.5" .45-70 caliber barrel marked on the left side of breech area with, "V", "P", and an "EAGLE'S HEAD". The breech block is marked with the serial number, "364579" and the top of the trapdoor is marked "US MODEL 1884". The lock is marked with the "EAGLE" motif in front of the hammer and "U.S." over "SPRINGFIELD". The barrel is fitted with the correct Buffington rear sight. Two-piece carbine style trigger guard and stacking sling swivels and according to FLAYDERMAN'S GUIDE, this is a first type with only 2000 produced in 1888. All steel surfaces have salt and pepper rust pitting, staining, and overall has a grey color (some original blue finish remains in protected areas. The stock has been lightly sanded and re-varnished over the years and is solid with minor scratches and dings from years of handling. This rifle is in good mechanical working order.
