c. 1880, Very Rare Original Proof Copy of George Washington’s Personal Library Bookplate, Produced and Signed Artist’s Proof on India Paper, by noted Engraver Samuel Hollyer, Choice Crisp Mint.
This is an rare original c. 1880 Engraved Proof Representation of President George Washington’s personal library Bookplate. It has been personally Signed in pencil by the engraver, “S. Hollyer.” Samuel Hollyer (1797–1883), was a line engraver, fine art publisher, collector of watercolors, and Deputy Sealer at the Court of Chancery. This Signed “Private Plate” Proof, is on white India paper, mounted on a larger size heavy wove recessed die-cut panel, also known as a Large Die Sunk Proof. The engraved Bookplate itself measures 3.75” x 5” with the overall presentation page measures to 8.5” x 11.” This specific item was in lot #223 in the 1920 celebrated auction of “The Splendid Library of the Late Edwin B. Holden, at one time President of the Grolier Club, New York City.” (American Art Association.) This wonderful c. 1880 original engraved representation of George Washington’s original bookplate (an original example from the 1780s sold for over $2,500) is itself extremely rare.
