Abraham Lincoln Tintype Photograph After The 1864 “Brady” Photograph Used Upon the United States $5 Note
Rare Tintype of Abraham Lincoln Engraving, in a Carte de Visite format style, Reproduced By George F. Ayer of Portland, ME, After Matthew Brady, Choice Extremely Fine.
This impressive Abraham Lincoln Engraving Tintype Carte de Visite measures 4” x 2.5” in overall size, Union Card Picture holder has an oval front opening containing a 2” tall period Tintype Image (by sight). This specific image is of a most historic Abraham Lincoln engraving, produced after the 1864 Portrait Photograph by Matthew Brady. Later, this very image would become the central Lincoln Portrait to adorn the United States $5 note. The original card corners are crisp and clean, the Tintype Photograph image is clear with nice sharp contrast.

The reverse side of the Tintype card holder has the printed maker’s identification label reading, “George F. Ayer, Photographer, 161 Middle Street, Portland” upon its creamy white cardstock. Its original paper seal remains fully intact, has never been torn or tampered. Two fairly recent occurrences of the more common, small Ferrotype Tintype images of this historic Abraham Lincoln image housed in small brass holders have both sold for the low four figures at a Southwestern auction house. Overall, this impressive Abraham Lincoln Tintype image is in museum quality condition and is excellent for display.
Mathew B. Brady was one of the first American photographers, best known for his scenes of the Civil War. He studied under inventor Samuel F. B. Morse, who pioneered the daguerreotype technique in America.
