Civil War Union Soldier’s Handcolored Pastel Portrait
c. 1863 Civil War Era, Hand-Colored Pastel Artwork Portrait of Young Union Soldier, Unsigned, measuring 20” x 15.75”, Choice Very Fine.
This handsome Pastel of a young Civil War Union Soldier is shown in a chest up portrait, attired in his fine dress military uniform wearing his Kepi. He has a black mustache and beard, his clothes have been handcolored in Union blue, with buttons and other hardware tinted in light golden-brass hues. There is some scattered light overall age foxing and has a couple of short breaks in the art board at the extreme top margin edge that is well clear of the image that can be easily matted out, and trivial faint creasing. This Pastel Portrait is Civil War period, very attractive and skillfully done on heavy art board and modern matted. A beautifully executed artwork that would be a nice addition for display in any Civil War collection.
“Pastel” is an art medium in the form of a stick, consisting of pure powdered pigment and a binder. The pigments used in pastels are the same as those used to produce all colored art media, including oil paints; the binder is of a neutral hue and low saturation. The color effect of pastels is closer to the natural dry pigments than that of any other process.

Pastels have been used by artists since the Renaissance, and gained considerable popularity in the 18th century, when a number of notable artists made pastel their primary medium.

An artwork made using pastels is called a pastel (or a pastel drawing or pastel painting). Pastel used as a verb means to produce an artwork with pastels; as an adjective it means pale in color.
