Rare Red Print “Newly Bearded” Lincoln Patriotic Cover
c. 1862 Civil War Period, Abraham Lincoln Illustrated Patriotic Postal Cover, Printed in Red, showing Abe with his Newly Grown Beard, Walcott Unlisted. Milgram AL-142. Choice Very Fine.
This highly ornate, illustrated cover shows a red portrait of Abraham Lincoln with the addition of his newly grown beard in an oval at the lower left and name “LINCOLN.” below. Overall large scene of a Union Officer at camp with Tents design, and an American Flag flying above. Red 1861 3c Stamp (Scott-65), slightly trimmed at right from envelope reduction when opened. Boldly tied upon this cover to Corinth, N.Y. by a Washington, D.C. 2/15 Circular Date Stamp. The wonderful Civil War period camp scene adorns this patriotic cover with Lincoln showing off his relatively new whiskers – no doubt added to a beardless woodcut! Cataloged by Dr. James Milgram as AL-142 in “Abraham Lincoln Illustrated Envelopes and Letter Paper 1860-1865.” A very scarce issue, made even rarer by the actual postal usage.
