Confederate President Jefferson Davis Carte de Visite
c. 1860s Civil War Period, Carte de Visite Photograph, of Confederate President Jefferson Davis, Fine.
An original Civil War Period Carte de Visite Photograph of Confederate President Jefferson Davis, measuring 2.5” x 4”, no photographer's imprint but most certainly of Confederate origin. This CDV came in an album of photographs from New Orleans. Surface soiling, typically light appearance due to use of poor quality "necessity" materials by CSA photographers. A scarce and patriotic retouched image with ink inscription in an early hand reading, "President Jeff Davis."
Jefferson Finis Davis (1808 - 1889) was an American statesman and leader of the Confederacy during the American Civil War, serving as President of the Confederate States of America for its entire history. Davis graduated from West Point and fought in the Mexican–American War as a Colonel of a volunteer regiment. He served as the United States Secretary of War under Democratic President Franklin Pierce.

Both before and after his time in the Pierce administration. As a U.S. Senator representing the State of Mississippi, he argued against Secession, but did agree that each state was sovereign and had an unquestionable right to secede from the Union. On February 9, 1861, after Davis resigned from the United States Senate, he was selected to be the Provisional President of the Confederate States of America.
