Known as Kunisada II, this artist lived from 1823-1880. He
studied with Kunisada I and took his name when Kunisada I
took the name of Toyokuni who had been HIS teacher. It
was common practice for
artists who attained a high level of success to take on the
name of their teacher, as a sign of respect. <p>This type of
print is
called a diptych, that is, printed on two
pages side by side in a book. It was originally printed in one piece, but was divided for publication in book form
It is meant to be seen as one
image.
The two sides here are mounted together as one very beautiful
scene in the lives of high born Japanese of the day.
