<td width="100%">
Known as Kunisada II, this artist lived from 1823-1880. He
studied with Kunisada I and took his name when Kunisada I
took the name of Toyokuni who had been HIS teacher. It
was common practice for
artists who attained a high level of success to take on the
name of their teacher, as a sign of respect. <p>This print is
from a pair of small paper books printed in the 1860's. When
pages of the two books are lined up, the image is completed.
The two sides are mounted side by side as one image.<P>These
woodblock prints were inner pages of two small, paper books
being printed at the time. The covers were done in brilliant
color, and the interior pages were usually black and white.
These pages tell a story, which explains the written script one
sees on these prints.
