Benjamin Franklin Portrait Depiction Staffordshire Figure
c. 1860 Victorian Era Staffordshire BENJAMIN FRANKLIN Portrait Earthenware figure titled, “The Old English Gentleman” in Hand-Painted Polychrome with Gold Script on its white base, Choice Very Fine.
This English Staffordshire Figure was meant to depict Benjamin Franklin for likely export to America. This example measures about 9.25” tall including its base. Standing pose figure is titled, “The Old English Gentleman” in Gold Script on the base with his hat under left arm, and holding a document in right hand. The round base depicts this figure standing on green grass, wearing a decorative fancy dotted waistcoat with Colonial period black shoes. Modeled as appearing to be Benjamin Franklin. There is some minor irregularity to the green grassy enamel at base, appears as made. Franklin is shown wearing a colorful waistcoat and britches with period black shoes. Similar to other Ben Franklin ceramic depict ions, having rosy cheeks red lips and black facial features. Similar in its look to Arman AI.15 shown illustrated on page 233 of ANGLO-AMERICAN CERAMICS, Part 1, by authors David and Linda Arman, published 1998. An unusual Benjamin Franklin design, yet not specifically identified as either Ben “Franklin” or George “Washington”.
