Decorative Scrimshaw Engraved “Folk Art” Naval “MAID OF - WESTERN SEA” Powderhorn
c. 1850 to 60s Era, Hand-carved, American Seaman Engraved “Folk Art” Decorative Powderhorn, 15.5” Long, Choice Extremely Fine.
This is an authentic, quite ornate decorated Naval Theme Powderhorn. It has a well crafted, large 4” long x 2.75” tall, American Flag Sailing Ship under full sail. In addition, there is a terrifying ancient “mutant” looking fish with large dangerous teeth, measuring 3” long x 1.25” tall, which could likely be the depiction of a transformed “Siren Mermaid.” Finally, there is a close-up image of a Bow-sprite or Masthead. This wonderful engraved vignette displays a dolphin being ridden “tail-riding” with a voluptuous, bare breasted young naked Island-girl on it’s back. That majestic 5” tall x 2.75” wide image is surrounded by a fine crosshatch design border and the legend, “MAID OF - WESTERN SEA.”

Two Hand-carved rings decorate on spout tip. There is no plug. The larger wooden endcap has a period metal “drawer-pull” attached, used to carry it or attach to a strap, with the original cap nails fully intact. There is some real age and actual light wear from use, a couple of faint natural surface cracks to horn and endcap. One fine hairline being carefully used in the selection of the location for the ferocious fish, as it looks like a long fisherman’s line with a bait at its end! The workmanship to create and decorate this unique Western Pacific theme Powderhorn is excellent. An impressive, highly desirable piece of Nautical American Folk Art.
