c. 1800-40s Early American Hand-Engraved “Folk Art” Style Decorative Powder Horn, with a Militia Officer Holding His Long Rifle, Extremely Fine.
Hand-Engraved Powder Horn, likely sized for a pistol measuring about 8" x 2" with a domed wood plug attached by iron pins at the wide end, topped with a brass button that would have once secured a leather lanyard. The surface of the horn near the spout is shaved down and decorated with a stippled pattern intersected by lines carved in a grid pattern and, further down, intersecting diamonds. The Horn itself retains its natural surface, apart from a decorative 1/2” wide strip carved down to appear natural brown, running from the base to the carvings near the spout as a special decorative feature. The natural surface is carved with a variety of figures and images, including a full-length depiction of the profile of a military officer wearing his sizable bi-corner hat holding his rifle. In addition, other vignettes include a Cat, a row of Colonial Era Style Houses, and a variety of complex and attractive Geometric and Floral pattern designs. This “Folk Art” style Powder Horn indeed shows some actual light wear from use, lacking the small end spout plug, with some original natural tone to the iron pins at the end cap. A lovely, authentic and original period Powder Horn that is quite attractive for display.
