Hand-Painted Tin Tavern Sign

c. 1840s Original Tin Tavern Sign, Hand-Painted on Both Sides apparently depicting a “Duke of Wellington” or army officer likeness portrait, likely British, Choice Very Fine.
This dramatic and colorful Hand-Painted Tin Tavern Sign measures a very large 34.5” x 24” in size and with its outer frame measures fully to an overall 40.5” x 29.5”. This impressive original Tin Tavern Sign appears to have been mounted outdoors at some point to be viewed from two directions, unknown date, maker or origin. Both sides share a nearly identical painting which appears to be the likeness of the Duke of Wellington, depicted handsomely dressed in his military uniform. The portraits are surrounded by an ornate inner gold wreath for added decoration. There are many pubs, taverns and other businesses that have adopted his famous and historic namesake.

There are some original screw holes along the top of the frame. The green painted wooden outer frame is heavily weathered. The two Hand-Painted sections themselves have held up quite well to the elements over time, possibly having been touched up long ago. One side is in excellent condition with just three scattered chips among Wellington’s coat buttons. The other side is in somewhat lower condition having weathered more with some light flaking throughout Wellington’s jacket, as this side obviously faced the weather. Both sides have evidence of old repaint which was probably necessary from time to time, being an outdoor hanging Tavern Sign. This Tin Advertising Tavern Sign that is of museum quality and is excellent for display.
The title “Duke of Wellington” was created in May 1814 for Arthur Wellesley (1769-1852), who defeated Napoleon’s forces at the Battle of Waterloo. Upon his death, his son, Arthur Richard Wellesley (1807-1884) became the second Duke of Wellington. He was followed by Henry Wellesley (1846-1900), who was the third Duke.
