This specific design pattern is fully Identified and listed as Number 63, on page 75, of “Threads of History: Americana Recorded on Cloth 1775 to the Present,” by Herbert Ridgeway Collins and published by the Smithsonian Institution. An impressive, highly ornately decorative textile measures 14.5" x 13" (by sight) and is gold painted wooden Framed to 14” x 16” for display. The Cotton Cloth Commemorative Textile is printed in brown, having been printed and issued in conjunction with Lafayette's U.S. Return Tour in 1824-1825. There is some scattered unobtrusive light discoloration, centerfold soiling and expected uniform fading, yet it is whole, complete and without damage. The ornate design depicts the Marquis's arrival at Independence Hall and at New York Harbor. There is a large 3.5” tall central oval image with Lafayette's portrait facing left, the legend “Genl. La Fayette” above and “The Nation’s Guest” below. It is surrounded by a transcript of the Governor of Pennsylvania's official Invitation to Lafayette, along with Lafayette’s reply to that Invitation. A large illustration decorates the top third of the textile with the legend below reading: “General LaFayette’s arrival at Independence Hall Philad. Sept 28 1824”. A second large illustration at bottom showing ships on the Hudson with crowds of people viewing, has the legend above reading: “The arrival of Genl La Fayette at the Port of New York in the Ship Cadmus, Captn Allyn Augt 17th 1824”. This example is of a very rare type and in far superior quality than is typically seen for this vintage of printed textile. Pleasing in eye appeal, it is ready to hang on display.
