War of 1812 Colored Engraving of the Battle of Lake Champlain
c. 1815 War of 1812 Period, Hand-Colored Print titled, “NAVAL ACTION ON LAKE CHAMPLAIN”, engraved by Read, Choice Extremely Fine.
Hand-Colored Engraving, measuring 4.75” x 8.5” (by sight) matted and framed fully measuring 11.75” x 13.75”, in superb condition, with the printed name of the engraver “Read sc.” (possibly the London engraver W. Read) in the lower right corner. This delightful colorful action print depicts an exciting scene of the War of 1812 Naval Battle of Lake Champlain. Several American ships at anchor across the lake, are firing their cannon at two British warships. White clouds of smoke rise from the American ships and black clouds arise from the British warships, indicating they are ablaze. In the foreground, several troop transports, some carrying British soldiers in red, others with American soldiers in blue, are firing on each other. Lake Champlain is a narrow lake sitting on the borders of Vermont, New York and Canada. Professionally framed by Towne Gallery, Lenox, Massachusetts. We have not removed this very scarce print from its frame. This print sold for $1,062 in our EAHA Auction of December 9, 2006 and we have offered no other since. Viewed through special UV Plexiglas in a nice modern wood frame which is ready to hang on display.
