Washington Benevolent Society “Pro Patria” Silk Ribbon
c. 1806 Federal Period, George Washington Benevolent Society “Pro Patria” Silk Ribbon, Choice Very Fine.
This black Printed White Silk Ribbon measures 6.5” x 1.75” with a crude engraved woodblock printed portrait of George Washington with "Pro Patria" or "For Country" at the top, above Washington. "Washington Benevolent Society" is printed below. The Washington Benevolent Society Ribbons are regarded as some of the earliest partisan objects in American political history. This Ribbon shows some edge fraying and browning with scattered age tone. It came together with a small paper tag sewn into it reading, “Sarah Grant - 1806.” There is a crease at the middle of the ribbon, printing is good for such a highly rustic engraved design and is in very nice overall condition for its age. Rare design type, being the first we have offered.
Washington Benevolent Societies were local or "grass roots" political clubs established from 1808-1816 by the Federalist Party in the United States to gain votes. The Federalists, like any political party, had wanted to get as many members (and votes) as possible. Members of the Washington Benevolent Societies received Silk Ribbons. These Societies were set up in states such as New York, Rhode Island, New Jersey.
