Extremely Rare The Death of General George Washington Historic Textile After an Engraving by Amos Doolittle
c. 1800, Historical Textile titled, "The Death of General Washington" Patriotic Brown and White American Cotton Memorial Kerchief, Listed in "Threads of History” No. 21, Framed, Choice Very Fine.
This outstanding original Textile measures 17.75” x 19.75” being made in Philadelphia by Pember & Luzarder, produced shortly after Washington’s death. The design is After an engraving by the famous patriot, early American artist and engraver, Amos Doolittle. The large circular central vignette depicts George Washington on his deathbed being attended by his doctors Craik and Dick, as a weeping Martha Washington sits at the foot of his bed. Six large cartouches surround the central scene lavishing there text in praise on Washington as General of the American Army and President. Overall, the condition is excellent for a textile of this type and period having excellent dark text and designs. There is a slight lightening in the field above the image plus several extremely trivial scattered holes at the top of and just above the central vignette which do not significantly distract. This is an extremely rare textile -- only the third that we know of in the last 25 years. Now nicely matted and framed for display, measuring fully to about 24” tall x 26.5” wide. This important George Washington memorial Textile is listed in the superb reference book, "Threads of History: Americana Recorded on Cloth 1775 to the Present" published by the Smithsonian as item No. 21. Ex: EAHA Auction, July 5, 2006 lot 4063. The finest example we have offered and fully ready to hang on display.
