Museum Quality George Washington “Ascending In To Glory” Large Size Historical Liverpool Creamware Pitcher
c. 1800 George Washington Historical Liverpool Creamware Pitcher, “Ascending In To Glory” legend, United States Flag Sailing Ship with large American Heraldic Eagle vignette Transfers, Choice Extremely Fine.
A delightful large size Historical Liverpool Pitcher that is excellent for display. It measures 9.5” tall and is 5.25” at its base. Produced for the American Market in England as a decorative George Washington Patriotic Commemorative Memorial Tribute Display. The surfaces and extremely clean and glossy smooth having choice transfers, with one fine hairline inside the pitcher at its spout, as made when fired. The main transfer legend reads “Ascending into Glory” shown listed as W.41 on page 206 of Arman’s book, “Anglo-American Ceramics” (1998). It prominently displays President Washington dressed in Roman style toga robes, being carried up to Heaven by an Eagle and Angel. The imagery of “Liberty” sits below, with her head in her hand in mourning, while two other figures watch his ascension. Below George Washington is a plaque which reads: “Sacred to the Memory of Washington” including his birth and death dates. The upper portion of the scene has five Winged Cherubs watching. The opposite side displays a large Three Masted American Sailing Ship flying a 15 Star American Flag, of a transfer design variety unlisted in Arman. Under the spout is a Seal of the United States, listed as S. 17 (without the Jefferson quote) on page 163 in Arman. It shows a American Heraldic Eagle with ribbon in it’s beak inscribed with the motto “E Pluribus Unum”. Overall, this is one of the finest quality examples of this popular major design type we have offered.
