c. 1800 “Mourning” Era Engraving of George Washington
c. 1800 Death of Washington Mourning Period, Engraving of George Washington, Reworked by Barralet After the D. Edwin and F. Bartoli Engraving, Choice Very Fine.
Barralet Engraving After D. Edwin and F. Bartoli (Hart 788), and as illustrated in Wick. Measures 9” x 14” by sight. The original glass "matte" is reverse painted in black and gold, with its apparently original decorative 14.75” x 19.75” gilt wood frame, some trivial outline paint has bubbled and flaked off. Engraving displays a seated General George Washington in his military uniform with sword at his side. The text in top center reads, “Washington, / Sacred to Memory.” At bottom center, a darkened American Eagle is perched atop what appears to be Washington’s Sword, two female figures stand next to a central Funeral Urn with their hands over their faces in mourning, all flanked by many flags, plus cannon and cannon balls. The Urn has a plaque at center which reads: “OB. / Dec 14.1799. / AEt. 68”. Overall a very rare variety being the first we have offered, and a wonderful Engraving framed and ready for display.
