(c.1791) 1C Washington Small Eagle Cent--Obverse
(c.1791)<1C> Washington Small Eagle Cent--Obverse Die Trial--MS63 Brown NGC. Baker 16F. The edge is lettered PAYABLE AT WAREHOUSE OF THOS. & ALEXR. HUTCHINSON. According to the most recent (1999) edition of Rulau and Fuld's Medallic Portraits of Washington, "Baker numbers 15 and 16 supposedly were ordered from Westwood's mint in Birmingham by W. and Alex Walker of Birmingham, and distributed in America by Thomas Ketland & Sons of Philadelphia." This is a uniface die trial and is alleged to be unique. The obverse is a bit softly detailed on the highpoints of Washington's hair. The surfaces are glossy with rich, even, reddish-brown patina. The only defects of note is a slight area of discoloration below the I of WASHINGTON and very shallow, diagonal scratch on Washington's peruke.
