“EUROPE” and “ASIA” Hand-Colored Allegorical Print
c. 1790 18th century, Hand-Colored Allegorical Print, Featuring “EUROPE” and “ASIA” by Artist “D. Gerolimo,” probably England, with Fancy Brass Covered Period Frame, Choice Very Fine.
An original Hand-Colored Print, 6.25” x 4.25” (by sight), framed to an overall size of 7.5” x 5.5” housed with a period Decorative Pressed Brass upon wood frame has its original loop for hanging upon display intact at top. This impressive early Print shows “Europe” cornucopia behind, standing and holding her powerful Spear and British Shield with the noble British Lion at her feet, and “Asia” being displayed as a Female figure, standing and holding out a Smoking Incense Burner with a Camel shown to her right. The central background Sailing Ships are displayed as a representation of trade, while another Ship sails out at sea. Unobtrusive corner of paper is lacking at the upper left, some toning and spots tend to blend into the overall image. The gilt brass frame has two loose corners at top, some splitting and flaking of its golden gilt. Printed at the very bottom, just covered by the frame edge reads the artist’s name, “D. Gerolimo.” This amazing “EUROPE” and “ASIA” Hand-Colored Allegorical Print is ready to immediately hang upon display as originally intended.
