Hand-Colored Allegorical Print “AMERICA” & “AFRICA”
c. 1790 18th Century, Classic Hand-Colored Allegorical Etching, “AMERICA” & “AFRICA” by Artist “D. Gerolimo,” probably England, Choice Very Fine.
This impressive Framed, Hand-colored Allegorical Etching, probably England, late 18th century, America/Africa, with the inscription naming the artist, "D. Gerolimo" below, 4 3/4 x 6 7/8 in., in pressed brass frames. It is an original, Hand-Colored Print, measuring 6.25” x 4.25” (by sight), framed to an overall size of 7.5” x 5.5”. Period pressed gilt Brass frame upon wood has its original loop for hanging at top intact. The outer gilt Brass frame has some separation at the corners, chipping and gilt separation yet appears wholly original as such. There is some scattered light to moderate tone which appears to blend into the context of the overall image.

This classic design Print displays the Allegorical female figure “America” Standing and holding an American Flag and “Africa” being depicted as a male figure standing in his fancy headdress and holding a Spear, with a quiver of arrows on this back and a native straw hut to his right. Although there are seventeen stars on the American Flag, it is simply an artist rendering, not to be used to date this item. Printed at the very bottom, just covered by the frame edge reads the artist’s name, “D. Gerolimo.” A Snake is shown climbing a tree just to left of “America” and a Crocodile walks behind “Africa.” The background shows a lake and waterfall. A wonderful early Hand-Colored Allegorical Print “AMERICA” & “AFRICA” is ready to immediately hang upon display as originally intended.
