c. 1790-1800 Federal Period, Historical Liverpool Creamware Pitcher with American Patriotic Theme Vignette Transfers: “Peace Plenty and Independence”, “May Commerce flourish” and “Hope”, England, Extremely Fine.
This large size Historical Liverpool Pitcher has a beautiful design, measuring about 9.75” tall x 5.5” wide at its base. It displays four vivid black transfers, the first titled: “May COMMERCE flourish” that shows the female figure of Lady Liberty as “Commerce” seated on rocks holding a Pole with an American Liberty Cap and Shield while the Sun’s rays burst from behind her head. There is a Sailing Ship in distance, surrounded by a floral border, which is a transfer design not listed in the Arman reference. The other side shows: “PEACE. PLENTY and INDEPENDENCE”, displaying the figures Peace and Plenty with an American Heraldic Eagle perched atop a Cannon, with an early American Flag behind, similar to “P. 14” on page 147 of David Arman reference book, “Anglo-American Ceramics” Part 1 (1998). A third transfer under the spout is titled: “HOPE”. It shows the female figure standing on the ocean’s shore holding onto a large Anchor with a Sailing Ship in the background (not listed in Arman). Also, displayed under the handle, is a decorative Floral design transfer. An outstanding example with trivial wear, has no cracks or detractions, and is excellent for any Patriotic display.
