Unique & Unlisted Folk Style Type George Washington Inaugural Button with Large American Eagle Without Inscription Star or Border
(1789) George Washington Inaugural Button, Engraved American Heraldic Eagle, Original Shank Intact, Type Not Listed in the Albert Catalog or Cobb, Very Fine.
Believed Unique. 34 mm. This circa 1789 Inaugural Patriotic Design may have been made at that time to possibly about 1801. Unlisted, this Heraldic Eagle Design George Washington Inaugural Button is similar in ways to Albert WI-2, yet it does not have a banner or any stars around the Eagle’s head. Partial inscription in the plain back reads “Plated” which may indicate a c. 1801 manufacture date. This remarkable Commemorative Patriotic American Button is a bit wavy, rich brown in color and exhibits some areas of fine micro-porosity with an even patina with its designs very clear. Original shank is fully intact, just slightly bent. Type not listed in either the Albert reference or in the Cobb Collection catalog of George Washington Inaugural Buttons. None were in the Cobb collection when sold at auction in 2005. The first of this wonderful design style we have encountered and worthy of the most advanced and specialized collections.
