George Washington Inaugural Button with Large American Eagle Without Inscription, Star, or Border
George Washington Inaugural Button, Large American Patriotic Heraldic Eagle, 34 mm, Coat Button, Copper or Brass, Original Shank Intact, Designed after the “Eagle with Star” Type, Not Listed in Albert or in Cobb, Very Fine.
Hand Engraved after the Believed Unique. 34 mm. This circa 1789 GW Inaugural Patriotic Design may have been made at that time to possibly about 1801. Unlisted, this Heraldic Eagle Design George Washington Inaugural Button is similar in ways to Albert WI-2 without displaying either a Star, Banner, or Stars about the Eagle’s head. Hand-Engraved this button exhibits Seven Arrow Tops and Eight Shaft Bottoms held within the Eagle’s right talon. The word “PLATED” is seen on the smooth plain curved back which is not stamped. It has been suggested the word may indicate a maker’s date circa 1801. This remarkable American Patriotic Button is deep brown and exhibits some areas of wear and is a slight bit wavy from apparent actual use with its patriotic American Eagle design very clear. The original shank is intact and correct having a slight bend. This large American Patriotic Heraldic Eagle design not listed in either the Albert reference book on George Washington Inaugural Buttons, or did it appear in the famous Cobb Collection sale of 2005. The first of this likely unique Handcrafted American Eagle design style we have encountered.
