c. 1784 Revolutionary War Battle of “Sarratoga” Engraving First French Publication Using “The United States” In Title
c. 1784 Engraved Print of the Surrender of Revolutionary War British General John Burgoyne’s British Army at “Sarratoga” (sic), November 17, 1777, Choice Crisp Extremely Fine.
Finely Engraved View, titled: “Sarratoga” (sic). It depicts the Surrender of British General John Burgoyne's British Army during the Revolutionary War. This victory at the Battle of Saratoga in New York by the American Patriot Continental Army was seen as a turning point in the war. It played a major role to convince the King of France to join in the American Colonists' efforts.

This view appeared in Nicolas Ponce and Francois Godefroy's “Recueil d'estampes representant les differents evenements de la guerre qui a procure l'independance aux Etats unis de l'Amerique.” This was the first French publication to use the name “The United States” within its title. Well printed in rich black upon a sheet measuring 8” x 9”, in French text below. The Engraving itself measures about 6.7” x 5” and the paper is clean with the original printing plate embossed outline still partially seen at the bottom edge. Impression with some marginal soiling that overall appears excellent for display. Rare. See: Howes #C576.
