c. 1780 Revolutionary War Period, Handsome Steel Plate Proof Engraving of “DICTATOR” General George Washington, Attributed to Jean-Victor Dupin, Published by Esnauts and Rapilly, Paris, France, Choice Extremely Fine.
This original apparent Proof Strike Engraving measures 5.25” x 7.5” its Steel Plate outline being deeply embossed into a 8.5" x 11.25" period laid heavy paper page sheet. Some trivial outer tone to the sheet margins with a couple of old mount traces on the blank reverse. There is a large impressively designed central Portrait of General Washington in his fine military uniform is shown holding his sword, inside a decorative outer oval border. Militaria including a cannon, draped flag, sword and shield are depicted below his image. The legend title is remarkable in that it describes Washington as the Genera-in-Chief of the Anglo-American Army, chosen as Dictator by Congress in February 1777! It reads, in full: “GEORGE WASHINGTON EQER - General en Chef de l’Armee Anglo-Ameriquane, nomme Dictateur par le Congress en Fevrier 1777.” The print quality is of a deeply impressed Proof Strike with every detail extremely sharp and distinct on a clean central portion of the sheet.
