c. 1776 Revolutionary War to Civil War Era, Naval Cannon Iron Chain Shot, 14” in length, Choice Extremely Fine.
This rare Naval Cannon Iron Chain Shot measures nearly 14” in length and consists of two small “cannonballs” tied at either end, each round and measuring 2.25” in diameter. These Naval Cannon Iron Chain Shots were fired as “grape shot” with likely a small number of these being fired from a cannon at one time. As the chain shot left the cannon, it spun out to its full length and inflicted far more damage than could a single ball. When one looks at artwork from Revolutionary War naval battles, the shredded sails one sees dangling from the ships’ yards (horizontal spars) are the result of damage from chain shot and the similar sliding bar shot. Truly a fearsome period weapon, these are relatively rare and in high demand with military collectors. A high quality, exceedingly clean unused, original example of museum quality.
